Deeper Look at Centaurus A

ScienceDaily (May 16, 2012) ? The strange galaxy Centaurus A is pictured in a new image from the European Southern Observatory. With a total exposure time of more than 50 hours this is probably the deepest view of this peculiar and spectacular object every created. The image was produced by the Wide Field Imager of the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope at ESO's La Silla Observatory in Chile.

Centaurus A, also known as NGC 5128 [1], is a peculiar massive elliptical galaxy with a supermassive black hole at its heart. It lies about 12 million light-years away in the southern constellation of Centaurus (The Centaur) and has the distinction of being the most prominent radio galaxy in the sky. Astronomers think that the bright nucleus, strong radio emission and jet features of Centaurus A are produced by a central black hole with a mass of about 100 million times that of the Sun. Matter from the dense central parts of the galaxy releases vast amounts of energy as it falls towards the black hole.

This Wide Field Imager (WFI) picture allows us to appreciate the galaxy's elliptical nature, which shows up as the elongated shape of the fainter outer parts. The glow that fills much of the picture comes from hundreds of billions of cooler and older stars. Unlike most elliptical galaxies, however, Centaurus A's smooth shape is disturbed by a broad and patchy band of dark material that obscures the galaxy's centre.

The dark band harbours large amounts of gas, dust and young stars. Bright young star clusters appear at the upper-right and lower-left edges of the band along with the red glow of star-forming clouds of hydrogen, whilst some isolated dust clouds are silhouetted against the stellar background. These features, and the prominent radio emission, are strong evidence that Centaurus A is the result of a merger between two galaxies. The dusty band is probably the mangled remains of a spiral galaxy in the process of being ripped apart by the gravitational pull of the giant elliptical galaxy.

The new set of images from WFI include long exposures through red, green and blue filters as well as filters specially designed to isolate the light from glowing hydrogen and oxygen. The latter help us to spot the known optical jet features around Centaurus A, which were barely visible in a previous image from the Wide Field Imager.

Extending from the galaxy to the upper left corner of the image are two groups of reddish filaments, which are roughly lined up with the huge jets that are prominent in radio images. Both sets of filaments are stellar nurseries, containing hot young stars [2]. Above the left side of the dusty band, we find the inner filaments, lying about 30 000 light-years away of the nucleus. Further out, around 65 000 light-years away from the galaxy's nucleus and close to the upper left corner of the image, the outer filaments are visible. There is also possibly a very much fainter trace of a counter jet extending to the lower right.

Centaurus A has been extensively studied at wavelengths ranging from radio all the way to gamma-rays. In particular, radio and X-ray observations have been crucial for studying the interaction between the energetic output of the central supermassive black hole and its surroundings, see eso0903. Studies of Centaurus A with ALMA are just beginning.

Many of the observations of Centaurus A used to make this image were taken to see whether it was possible to use ground-based surveys to detect and study variable stars in galaxies like Centaurus A outside the local group [3]. More than 200 new variable stars in Centaurus A were discovered.

[1] The galaxy was first documented by British astronomer James Dunlop at the Parramatta observatory in Australia on August 4, 1826. This galaxy is often called Centaurus A because was the first major source of radio waves discovered in the constellation of Centaurus back in the 1950s.

[2] The origin of both filaments is not clear and astronomers still debate whether they are the result of the ionisation produced by radiation from the nucleus or the result of shocks within the gas clumps.

Delta says frequent fliers charged higher fares

Delta Air Lines says it may have charged some frequent fliers higher fares than other customers for almost three weeks because of a computer glitch.

Delta says it is unsure how many travelers paid higher fares because of the problem. Delta says the problem occurred after it upgraded the flight search engine on its website. The airline reverted to its old search engine after discovering the problem.

Two businessmen booking the same flight from Minneapolis to St. Louis noticed the problem a few weeks ago. They tried booking a number of flights while sitting side-by-side and saw the fare differences several times. WCCO TV in Minneapolis reported the fare discrepancies on Tuesday.

Monti faces tough challenges in changing Italy

LABOR REFORMS: Premier Mario Monti is pushing big changes to labor law, including a much-contested measure making it easier to fire workers. The changes are aimed at encouraging foreign investment and helping companies take on younger workers. But resistance has already forced the government to water down the reforms.

NEW TAX ON FIRST HOMES: Monti wants to re-launch a property tax on first homes that was abolished by former Premier Silvio Berlusconi. The property tax would raise ?11 billion ($14 billion) next year. But it's widely opposed in a country with 70 percent homeownership.

SPENDING REVIEW: Monti has ordered a review of government spending and solicited input from the public through the government's website to slash ?4.2 billion ($5.2 billion). The majority of responses have been from government employees. But he'll face a fierce fight when he targets individual departments.

STREAMLINING BUREAUCRACY: Monti aims to simplify and downsize bureaucracy, in particular making it easier to open businesses by bringing the process online. But impact on growth is uncertain as hard times stifle entrepreneurship.

INVESTMENT IN THE SOUTH: Monti has announced ?2.3 billion ($3 billion) in combined EU and government funds to invest in the impoverished south to help its development, including infrastructure projects, money for nursery schools and the elderly. But the south's problems have proven intractable and the funds may be largely wasted.

Facebook boosts IPO size by 25 percent, aims for $15 billion

NEW YORK/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Facebook Inc will increase the size of its initial public offering by 25 percent, a source familiar with the matter said, and could raise as much as $16 billion as strong investor demand for a share of the No.1 social network trumps debate about the company's long-term potential to make money.

Those concerns over revenue growth were underscored earlier on Tuesday, when General Motors said it planned to pull out of advertising on Facebook.

Facebook, founded eight years ago by Mark Zuckerberg in a Harvard dorm room, will add about 85 million shares to its IPO, floating about 422 million shares in an offering expected on Friday, the source told Reuters, declining to be identified because the information was confidential.

The expanded size, coupled with Facebook's recently announced plans to raise the IPO price range, would make Facebook the third-largest initial share sale in U.S. history after Visa Inc and GM. Facebook declined to comment on the increased IPO size, which was first reported by CNBC on Tuesday.

The social networking company is drumming up massive demand for the offering even as slowing revenue and user growth spur questions about the long-term Facebook story.

"This is much more a spectacle, a media event and a cultural moment than it is an IPO," said Max Wolff, an analyst at GreenCrest Capital. "This is not a game of models and fundamentals at this point."

GM's announcement, while ill-timed, should not seriously hurt Facebook's IPO reception for now as it may not be representative of advertisers' overall attitude, said Brian Wieser, an analyst with Pivotal Research Group. "The demand for the IPO probably won't be affected materially by this," he said, noting, however, there were probably a lot of calls between underwriters and investors following GM's announcement.

The IPO, Silicon Valley's largest, eclipses the roughly $2 billion debut by Google Inc in 2004.

Facebook raised the target price range to $34-$38 per share in response to strong demand, from $28-$35, according to a Tuesday filing. That would value the company at $93-$104 billion, rivaling the market value of Internet powerhouses such as Amazon.com Inc, and exceeding that of Hewlett-Packard Co and Dell Inc combined.

The increased price range made it very unlikely that Facebook shares would double on their trading debut as they might have if the company had come out at the low end of its initial price range, Wolff said. He expects a first-day gain of about 10 percent.

"No rational person thought they were buying the stock for $28," said Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Patcher, noting Facebook had traded as high as $44 in the secondary markets in recent months.

Facebook said in its latest filing that it arrived at the higher IPO price range after one week of marketing the offering - part of a cross-country roadshow in which CEO Zuckerberg has taken the stage to lay out his vision for the company's money-making potential and its top priorities.

The price range hike, coupled with strong results from Internet and social media players Groupon Inc and China's Renren Inc, contributed to a dotcom rally on Wall Street on Tuesday. Shares of Pandora Media Inc rose 10.3 percent, Zynga Inc was up 7.7 percent, Groupon climbed 3.7 percent and Renren gained 6.4 percent.

LONG-TERM GROWTH

Before the IPO size was increased, Facebook would have raised about $12.1 billion based on the midpoint price of $36 and the 337.4 million shares on offer originally.

At this midpoint, Facebook would be valued at roughly 27 times its 2011 revenue, or 99 times earnings. Google went public at a valuation of $23 billion, or 16 times its trailing revenue and 218 times earnings. Apple Inc went public in 1980 at a valuation of 25 times its revenue and 102 times earnings.

Facebook's IPO comes as some investors worry the company has not yet figured out a way to make money from a growing number of users who access the social network on mobile devices such as smartphones. Meanwhile, revenue growth from Facebook's online advertising business, which accounts for the bulk of its revenue, has slowed in recent months.

With some 900 million users, it had $1 billion in net income on revenue of $3.7 billion in 2011.

The company has also extended the time frame for its $1 billion acquisition of mobile app maker Instagram, projecting the deal would close this year instead of the second quarter as it previously indicated.

It provided no reasons, though a source familiar with the matter told Reuters last week that the U.S. Federal Trade Commission has reached out to Google and Twitter as part of the agency's standard review for deals of that size.

Facebook is scheduled to price its shares on Thursday and begin trading on the Nasdaq on Friday. A host of Wall Street banks are underwriting the offering, with Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs serving as leads.

Basement Plan Tutorial | Home Improvement Tools

    Planning a Basement Project

basement plansUnlike building a new house or an addition, a detailed plan is not absolutely necessary in finishing a lower level or basement if you?re not disturbing the foundation or any load-bearing posts or walls.

NOTE: Although you may not need a detailed plan, you will probably need a building permit to finish your basement, and that?ll require at least a sketch of your project?BEFORE you begin?to give your local building officials an idea of what you?re doing. Check with them before starting.

We wanted a bare minimum of walls downstairs to keep the spaces open, but we had a lot of low-hanging pipes and ducts to hide that would require several soffits.

We asked Dan Nepp of Tom Ellison Architects to sketch us a concept plan that would not only incorporate the necessary soffits but also use them to define living areas in the open spaces.

We used that sketch to start the project, but as the work progressed a more detailed plan evolved.

    Dealing with Dampness

Before starting any basement finishing, we strongly recommend that you solve any wetness or dampness problems because moisture will rot wood, drywall, carpet and most any other material you might be using.

If you do have moisture problems, we also strongly recommend that you consult a licensed waterproofing contractor with sound credentials and references.

But BEFORE taking that step, make sure that it?s not just a simple grading problem. If the ground along the outside of your foundation doesn?t slope down and away from the house, it?s likely that rain and melting snow will collect against the foundation and probably seep into your basement. If that?s your problem, build up the soil around the foundation to where water runs AWAY from the house.

Also check your rain gutters and downspouts for any leaks that might be letting water soak into the foundation. And use extensions on the downspouts to make sure water drains a few feet away from the house.

To solve more complicated problems, consult a licensed pro. But be aware that permanent solutions can involve costly excavation in order to waterproof the outside walls of the foundation, and to run new drain tile alongside the footings.

    Providing an Egress Window

An egress window is usally required by code in new basement projects ? especially if bedrooms are involved. They allow people to escape smoke or fire if doors or stairways are blocked.

Satisfying egress window requirements can be expensive because high-mounted basement awning windows don?t qualify.

First, egress windows have to open high and wide enough to let an adult pass through.

Second, egress window sills have to be less than 42? above the finished floor to permit easy departure. (One of our window units with a sill 56? didn?t qualify)

Installing one or more egress windows is obviously a worthy part of a basement project, but it requires buying a large window, cutting an opening in the foundation and mounting the window properly.

Egress windows often create drainage problems caused by the need to set the window bottom below ground level (usually accomplished with sand and gravel-based window wells and retaining walls).

The house in our project was built with one egress window in the lower level bedroom, satisfying that part of the code. But the concrete window well was so high that we had to secure a permanent ladder in it to fulfill all the safety requirements.

MIT Study: Prolonged Low-level Radiation Exposure Poses Little Risk

JSBiff sends this quote from MITnews:
"A new study from MIT scientists suggests that the guidelines governments use to determine when to evacuate people following a nuclear accident may be too conservative. The study (abstract), led by Bevin Engelward and Jacquelyn Yanch and published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, found that when mice were exposed to radiation doses about 400 times greater than background levels for five weeks, no DNA damage could be detected. Current U.S. regulations require that residents of any area that reaches radiation levels eight times higher than background should be evacuated. However, the financial and emotional cost of such relocation may not be worthwhile, the researchers say."

Inhabitat's Week in Green: self-driving cars, solar parasols and the ultimate DIY Iron Man suit

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week's most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us -- it's the Week in Green.

    Image

What seems more futuristic: flying cars or self-driving cars? They both sound a bit like science fiction, but they're both getting closer to becoming a reality. In the latest chapter of Google's efforts to develop a car that uses video cameras, radar sensors and lasers to navigate through traffic, the state of Nevada just granted Google the world's first license for a computer-controlled, driverless Toyota Prius. Meanwhile, this week we also checked in on the PAL-V (which stands for "Personal Air and Land Vehicle"), a two-seat hybrid car and gyroplane that runs on gas, biodiesel or bio-ethanol. In other transportation news, the Texas Central Railroad floated a plan to build a $10-billion bullet train that would run between Houston and Fort Worth, and Toyota officially unveiled its second-generation 2012 RAV4 EV, which features a Tesla powertrain.

We also saw green technology cropping up in unexpected places this week, like the $1-billion ghost town that will be built on virgin desert land in Lea County, New Mexico to test emerging green technologies. Construction on the ghost town is set to begin in late June. Milwaukee native Bryan Cera invented Glove One, a 3D-printed glove that doubles as a cell phone. And in Tokyo, participants heaved 100,000 LED lights into the Sumida River as part of the 2012 Tokyo Hotaru Festival. Although it certainly looked cool, that's a lot of LED bulbs to literally dump in the river, and it raises some questions about e-waste. GE found a more practical use for LEDs, unveiling a new LED light bulb to replace the 100-watt incandescent.

    Jawbone Big Jambox

Last year, headset vet Jawbone stepped into the wireless speaker market with the Jambox ($199.99, 3.5 stars), a portable Bluetooth speaker that doubles as a speakerphone accessory. Now, the company is taking the idea and making it bigger with the Big Jambox ($299.99 direct), a larger, heavier, and more-powerful speaker. For $100 more, it bumps the Jambox up from a good portable personal speaker to one that could easily drive a small party or handle a conference call for a large group. The sound quality isn't quite as clear and robust as what you get with the Editors' Choice Bose SoundLink Wireless Mobile Speaker ($299.95, 4 stars), but a long battery life and a handy speakerphone feature make the Big Jambox a top choice if you're looking for a wireless speaker to take with you.

    Design
Like the Jambox before it, the Big Jambox is a blocky brick of a speaker. It measures 3.6 by 10.1 by 3.2 inches (HWD) and weighs 3.2 pounds, dwarfing the Jambox 's 6.0 by 2.2 by 1.6 inches and 12 ounces. (In the photo below, the original Jambox is on the left.) Available in red, black, or white, the speaker is surrounded by a metal grille, and slightly rubberized panels on the left and right sides help protect it in transit. It features most of its controls on its top side, including Playback and Volume buttons along with a Jawbone button for accessing various smart features including voice dialing and battery status. The right side holds a Power button and button for Bluetooth pairing, plus a 3.5mm output, microUSB port, and a power plug connector.

Pairing a smartphone, tablet, or other Bluetooth device with the Big Jambox is simple. When you first turn on the speaker it will automatically enter pairing mode, and after you've paired it with one device you can pair it with additional devices by holding the pairing button. You can also connect an audio device directly to the Big Jambox through the 3.5mm input with the included cable. The microUSB port is solely for updating the Big Jambox's software, since unlike the Jambox, which charged via USB, it has a dedicated power jack and AC adapter. As a Bluetooth device, the range of the speaker is about 30 feet. According to Jawbone, the Big Jambox can last up to 15 hours on a single charge, much longer than, say, the Bose SoundLink, which is rated to last eight hours at moderate listening levels. I ran all of my tests on the Big Jambox, and after three days it still said the battery is "about full." It actually said that. Pressing the Jambox button summons a female robotic voice that can tell you battery status.

    Jawbone Big Jambox

    Performance
The Big Jambox sounds clear, and its larger size and more power lets it get much louder than the Jambox. I filled the 5,000-square-foot PC Lab with music by cranking the volume to max, and while my fellow editors preferred "Bye Bye Birdie" to Glenn Benton, most everyone heard both the show tunes and death metal. Vocals and strings sounded crisp but slightly bright, and midrange notes were full and accurate.

Our bass test track, The Knife's "Silent Shout," sounded deep and forceful. The low end sounded slightly crunchy, and other bass-heavy songs like the Beastie Boys' "Shake Your Rump" distorted slightly when the volume was turned up to maximum level. The Big Jambox is still a portable speaker, though, so don't expect driving sound to rock a room. It can deliver music to a small party, but it won't compete with a larger iPod dock or a full sound system.

In my test calls with an Apple iPhone 4S, voice call quality was clear, and the 360-degree microphone and larger size of the Big Jambox make it great for conference calls. Voices are picked up by the speaker easily at normal levels, and callers can be heard very loudly with the volume turned up.?

The Jawbone Big Jambox doesn't quite deliver the power and clarity of our Editors' Choice wireless portable speaker, the Bose SoundLink Wireless Mobile Speaker, and it's three times more expensive than some other wireless options like the Logitech Mini Boombox ($99.99, 4 stars), but it works well as a speakerphone and boasts a long battery life, which is key for a portable speaker. The Beats By Dre Beatbox Portable ($449.95, 3.5 stars) offers stronger audio quality given its larger size, but it requires six D-cell batteries to be portable. If you value flexibility over audiophile-grade sound quality, the Big Jambox should be at the top of your list.

    Serena Williams Rap Song (LISTEN)

The Serena Williams rap song is worth listening to. I think it would really inspire everyone to give the rap business a try, because if what she made passes for a single, then there’s a good chance everyone can do it. Please don’t misunderstand me. As a woman, I am very aware of how amazing her career in tennis has been. She overcame huge racial barriers, and found a successful career in a very snooty sport, known to be popular amongst the wealthy, country-club crowd. She went on to win the biggest tennis contest in the world, which turned her into a role-model for many minority athletes. But if you put all of that aside and listen to this song, it is very difficult to take her seriously. Check the rest of the story out over at TMZ, and watch the video below. I think Ashton Kutcher makes an amazing Steve Jobs – Bumpshack. Man, Jennifer Aniston is really showing signs of being pregnant. I wonder if this is making Brad Pitt jealous… I sort of doubt it – Celebrity Dirty Laundry. The man who murdered Jennifer Hudson’s family was finally found guilty – Diva Artist. Apple.com no longer shows a product called iPad Wi-Fi + 4G, and has instead renamed it to the the less controversial iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular. The problem with the term 4G is that U.S. carriers have utterly abused it and robbed it of any consumer-helpful meaning.

Seeking Chen Guangcheng's freedom in China via 'Internet meme'

Supporters of the activist lawyer have kept the torch burning for his release using Internet memes: online pieces of content that spread their message without rousing China's infamous censors.

Chen Guangcheng?s escape from house arrest has caught the attention of China?s vast Internet community, despite his name being blocked by the ?Great Firewall of China,? the nation?s Internet censors. ?The vehicle that sidesteps the censorship? ?The Internet meme.

?Internet meme? is a term that defies easy definition. Generally speaking, it is an idea or concept that rapidly spreads through the Internet?s population, often fueled by a kind of ironic humor. ?From ?lolcats? ? cat pictures juxtaposed with misspelled text ? to Rickrolling, hundreds of memes exist, with more being created daily by the denizens of the Internet. ?Indeed, an entire website has been devoted to documenting individual memes? rise and fall.

But the Western English-speaking world does not hold a monopoly on Internet memes; every online sphere has its own collection of memes, including China. ?And some memes have an added function in China?s heavily censored Internet: vehicle for political critique. ?Design strategist and meme researcher An Xiao Mina, speaking this past weekend at ROFLcon, a convention about Internet memes at MIT in Cambridge, Mass., called them ?the street art of the social web.?

Overt political criticism remains out-of-bounds for most online Chinese, as automated Internet filtering and alert human censors work to purge sensitive references. ?But memes allow Chinese Web users to express themselves by using a kind of guerrilla activism ? avoiding the keywords that flag the automated filters and disguising political messages such that human censors cannot distinguish them from the overwhelming volume of innocuous online speech.

Take Chen?s captivity and subsequent escape, which have been inspiration for a number of Chinese memes. ?One of the simplest is the ?Dark Glasses Portrait,? a phenomenon started in China, where Chen supporters take pictures of themselves wearing sunglasses in reference to the blind activist?s eyewear. ?In isolation, each photo does not trip the sensors of the ?Great Firewall? ? the photos are simply photos, the sunglasses simply sunglasses. ?But in the aggregate, the hundreds of photos send a loud message.

Other memes are more complex, using visual codes, parodies, and satire. ?An artist supporter of Chen created a satirical KFC ad, featuring a cartoon version of Chen in place of the Colonel, and the slogan ?Free CGC.? The similarity to KFC ads, which can be found all over China, provides a loose disguise, enabling Chen?s supporters to post the image ? say, as a bumper sticker ? despite its political message.?

Ronda Rousey shares why you should always call when you say you will

Strikeforce bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey has made quite a name for herself. She won the belt from Miesha Tate in March, and since then has appeared on "The Ultimate Fighter," in magazines and at UFC and Strikeforce shows. As she became famous, someone from her past suddenly reappeared. On Instagram, Rousey shared how an old beau contacted her out of the blue and how she responded.

Let this be a lesson to men everywhere. Always give the courtesy call, because you never know when a woman will become a famous mixed martial artist who is capable of embarrassing you and breaking your arm.
