Research at the University of Liverpool, using computer models to reconstruct the jaw muscle of Tyrannosaurus rex, has suggested that the dinosaur had the most powerful bite of any living or extinct terrestrial animal.

The team artificially scaled up the skulls of a human, alligator, a juvenile T. rex, and Allosaurus to the size of an adult T. rex. In each case the bite forces increased as expected, but they did not increase to the level of the adult T. rex, suggesting that it had the most powerful bite of any terrestrial animal.

Previous studies have estimated that T. rex's bite had a force of 8000 to 13,400 Newtons, but given the size of the animal, thought to weigh more than 6000kg, researchers suspected that its bite may have been more powerful than this. Liverpool scientists developed a computer model to reverse engineer the animal's bite, a method that has previously been used to predict dinosaur running speeds.

An animal's bite force is largely determined by the size of the jaw muscles. Using their computer models, researchers tested a range of alternative muscle values, as it is not precisely known what the muscles of dinosaurs were like. Even with error margins factored in, the computer model still showed that the T. rex had a more powerful bite than previously suggested. The smallest values predicted were around 20,000 Newtons, while the largest values were as high as 57,000 Newtons.

Researchers also found that the results for the juvenile T. rex had a relatively the weaker bite than the adult T. rex, even when size differences and uncertainties about muscle size were taken into account. The large difference between the two measurements, despite the error margins factored in, may suggest that T. rex underwent a change in feeding behaviour as it grew.

Dr Karl Bates, from the University's Department of Musculoskeletal Biology, said: "The power of the T. rex jaw has been a much debated topic over the years. Scientists only have the skeleton to work with, as muscle does not survive with the fossil, so we often have to rely on statistical analysis or qualitative comparisons to living animals, which differ greatly in size and shape from the giant enigmatic dinosaurs like T. rex. As these methods are somewhat indirect, it can be difficult to get an objective insight into how dinosaurs might have functioned and what they may or may not have been capable of in life.

"To build on previous methods of analysis, we took what we knew about T. rex from its skeleton and built a computer model that incorporated the major anatomical and physiological factors that determine bite performance. We then asked the computer model to produce a bite so that we could measure the speed and force of it directly. We compared this to other animals of smaller body mass and also scaled up smaller animals to the size of T. rex to compare how powerful it was in relative terms.

"Our results show that the T. rex had an extremely powerful bite, making it one of the most dangerous predators to have roamed our planet. Its unique musculoskeletal system will continue to fascinate scientists for years to come."

The research, in collaboration with the University of Manchester, is published in Biology Letters.

Best Places To Travel During The Holidays With Your Family ...

Thinking about taking your family on a Christmas vacation?

Although it has long been tradition to wait at home for Santa to arrive, a number of American families spend Christmas away from home each year. Christmas vacations are becoming more and more popular and you will likely find that there is a wide variety of fun holiday vacations available to you.

What better place to visit during the holiday season than the North Pole ? North Pole, New York that is.

Located in the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York, North Pole is one of the most magical places to visit during your Christmas vacation. Perfect for kids and kids at heart, North Pole is open for five weekends prior to Christmas during November and December.

Visitors are offered Christmas vacation packages that include meals, lodging, and admission to Santa?s workshop. Santa?s Village features shops where you can find the perfect souvenir from your Christmas vacation. There is often live music to keep the crowds entertained and you and your family can enjoy watching glassblowers, puppet shows and other holiday entertainment.

If New York state seems a little far from the real North Pole, try getting a little closer to the real thing by visiting North Pole, Alaska on your Christmas vacation. The Alaskan vacation package also includes a visit to Santa?s house in the North Pole. Also offered is an optional dog sled ride through Santa?s village in the North Pole. Enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience as you race through the magical North Pole on an authentic Alaskan dog sled. Like the vacation package in North Pole, New York, the Alaskan North Pole offers one or two night stays during weekends.

The Alaskan North Pole Christmas vacation includes hotel accommodations in nearby Fairbanks and at the Chena Hot Springs Resort. There is also lodging available at the Santaland RV Park. The Santa House also offers a large store where guests to the North Pole can find every type of souvenir from ?I Believe in Santa? hats to ?Santa Claus Crossing? signs and refrigerator magnets. Whether you are two or ninety-two the magic of Christmas in North Pole, Alaska will have you believing in Saint Nick.

If you are traveling before or during the Christmas season, then consider Hershey, Pennsylvania as your vacation destination. The home of Hershey?s candy, Hershey Park becomes home to Christmas Candyland, where over one million Christmas lights are put on display. In addition to the lights, the staff at Hershey Park constructs a number of animated displays that are sure to delight both you are your children.

Christmas Candyland is undoubtedly one of the most exciting Christmas time getaways for kids young and old. In addition to Christmas Candyland guests can enjoy the rest of the Park. Hershey Park is a popular destination for travelers year round, as it offers a wide variety of both entertainment and great candy. Christmas Candyland typically runs for a month prior to Christmas.

If your family has never taken a Disney vacation, Christmastime may be the perfect time to do it. In addition to enjoying the Walt Disney World parade which is televised each year from Disney World in Orlando, Florida, your kids will also enjoy seeing all their favorite Disney characters decked out in their Santa hats and Christmas outfits. There are also a number of special Christmas time shows put on in the parks including Mickey Mouse?s ?Twas the Night Before Christmas and Belle?s Enchanted Christmas Storytelling.

These Christmas activities can be great for young children. Giant Christmas trees are erected throughout the parks and lit up with thousands of Christmas lights, bringing the spirit of Christmas alive throughout the already magical Disney World. The weeks around the Christmas season are also times where lodging rates at Disney World resorts are typically lower than the peak season rates.

By traveling during the Christmas season you are likely to get tons of fun at a reduced price. The weather in central Florida during the Christmas season is typically in the mid-70s, a great change of pace if you are used to cold, wintry Christmas seasons. Spiritual books, parapsychology, New Age and metaphysical books ...

Article by David Gau-ghan

Many people believe that books are different

new age of spiritual books, even though there are so many books available that are described as new age spiritual books . If you look at the new age and spiritual conditions, we find similarities, where spiritual refers to soul or spirit and the new age has been described as ?of or relating to the consciousness of spiritual movements and awareness. ? New Age books covering health, medicine, philosophy, religion and the occult. And yet, the new age term was coined only in recent decades, mainly from the 1970s. So that begs the question ? is there such thing as a new era

Many so-called New Age books (and spiritual books) that have been written in recent decades are adamant that we are indeed in a new age spiritual era is new in all aspects of what has preceded. However, research on old books and spiritual books philosophy shows that humanity has gone through periods of high enlightenment before ? sometimes inspired metaphysical and spiritual awareness that equals or surpasses our current times. So is it not perhaps a new era as such, but simply a recollection of powers metaphysical, esoteric, parapsychology forgot a source of spiritual inspiration and we all possess but have temporarily. If this is the case, then perhaps a more apt term would be Mind Body Spirit.

Which brings us to another term so-called new age ? parapsychology. New age parapsychology is the study of paranormal and parapsychology term comes from the Greek para beside, beyond ?and psychology, derived from the Greek psyche,? soul, spirit ?. So here we are again back to the spiritual or, as mentioned above, Mind Body Spirit. Yet few, still insist that spiritual books, new age books new age parapsychology and themes are quite distinct. Perhaps this is why people are increasingly striking the phrase Mind Body Spirit in the attempt to model the different terms in a more unified category. If you look more closely at the key messages in the various spiritual books, new age books, metaphysical, esoteric, parapsychology, philosophy and books of improvement, not self, there are often similarities are sometimes veiled in different terms that could all be better described as Mind Body Spirit. Yes, the same philosophy books, which are essentially the belief system or has been accepted as an authoritative account by a group philosophy or school, have similarities with each other and thus to the most recent parapsychology new age spiritual and metaphysical esoteric books. Philosophy books available today, which are scriptures handed over the centuries that are the basic beliefs of many world religions, which have strong similarities with the original, although interpretation of these books over the ages led to contrasting viewpoints. Considering the war that the opposing views of philosophy looking for books through the ages has caused, perhaps this new era of parapsychology, with its metaphysical, esoteric and spiritual messages and books will help break these old belief systems that have divided humanity for so long, especially when united under the slogan of the most acceptable of Mind Body Spirit. The proliferation of self improvement books alone has brought a spiritual awareness to thousands, if not millions, seeking to grow through better acquainted. Old books are being rewritten in more spiritual philosophy a new age terminology and marketed under various terms, not only the new age and spiritual, but not so many books metaphysical esoteric books, new age parapsychology, books, books inspiration self improvement and even philosophy. A growing number of these inspirational books are grouped, on websites and also in physical bookstores, under the label Body Mind Spirit. The overriding influence of these books is, by encouraging readers to deepen Themselves to discover their true spiritual nature and it is encouraging to see so many New Age spiritual parapsychology (Mind Body Spirit) books coming out in increasing each year. Two books examined are listed on www.1-inspiration-quote-book.com / Although many readers place them in different categories. They are a mixture of metaphysical, spiritual improvement books, esoteric and self, even if they are based on a theme of science fiction. Above all, they are an inspiration, said from the perspective of an alien race of beings who are concerned about the direction we take. Whatever the different views, they easily fall into the category Body Mind Spirit more widespread and, overall, feedback from readers has been fantastic, many of them describing the book as ?an inspiration and thought provoking. ? As one reader wrote? The story slowly engulfed me, drew me until I was on my own journey. It opened my mind, pushing me to read more. I ask, is this just a novel or a key to our future ? The Business of Sharks ? CBS Miami

MIAMI (CBS4) Call it man?s inhumanity to sharks, or a man?s effort to make a living. Either way, the brutality of finning sharks is hard to watch.

In videos obtained by Greenpeace, violent struggles with the oceans top predator are recorded. In one particular video, the fight is lost by the shark as fishermen pull it up into the boat? repeatedly stab it until the animal stops squirming? and then hack off its fin. Sometimes the sharks are thrown into piles, finless but still alive. they slowly die.

Others are thrown overboard. Unable to swim, they are destined for certain death. Why the savage kills? It?s all for one thing? a bowl of soup? shark fin soup.

?I grew up eating shark fin soup. But I had no idea how it was obtained or what it really was,? said one Chinese-American man.

What began in China more than 600-years ago as a treat for the small number of Asia?s wealthy and elite? is now a multi-billion dollar business worldwide.

Ray Mou represents the government of Taiwan in Miami.

?Why is shark fin soup so popular in Asian culture?? asked CBS4?s Jeff Berardelli.

?In ancient culture, the shark fin symbolized the status of the person in society,? replied Mou.

A bowl of shark fin soup in China can cost between $80 to $300 dollars. That means even bigger bucks for fishermen. Shark fins sell for six to eight-hundred dollars a pound. That translates into an estimated 70 to 100 million sharks slaughtered each year? for soup.

?It?s pretty tasteless to me,? said Mou.

It?s no surprise that in Hong Kong streets are lined with shark fin shops. But even here in South Florida, a visit to just one Oriental market by CBS4, found shark fins being sold.

?Right here. These are shark fins,? Berardelli told the CBS4 photographer as he held up a packaged shark fin from the freezer section.

It?s not illegal to sell shark fins in Florida? or shark fin soup? which we also found on?the menu at a Chinese restaurant. A bowl of shark fin soup cost us?$15.95.

But the consumer?s consumption comes with a different kind of price tag.

Experts say some shark populations have declined by 90%. On January, 1st of this year,?Taiwan joined the U.S. by banning shark finning in their waters. It is the first Asian?country to do so.

?We believe that the obligation of the human being to conserve the endangered species is one of the main concerns,? Mou said.

Off Florida?s coastline, the shark hunting is less about soup and more about sport, according to local fishing guide ?Mark the Shark.?

?Over the years we have caught tens of thousand of sharks and my clients keep the sharks for trophies or they keep them for eating,? he explained to Berardelli.

Shark fishing is a great option for charter boat captains because not only are they a real thrill to catch, but you can find them close to shore.

They are even found in shallow waters, here in the Florida Keys, where Captain Chris Johnson?s business is thriving now more than ever? the policy for all his customers: catch and release. They never kill a shark.

?You kill enough sharks, you could literally wipeout a spot, and for me why do that?? asked Johnson. ?I?m going back to the exact place every time I go sharking and it?s just absolutely incredible!?

Personal Finance Advice And What You Need To Know | weicome ...

Managing your finances, especially if you are on a limited income, isn?t always easy. However, it is vital if you are going to avoid going into debt or worse. The advice in this article can help you control your spending and help you avoid becoming a credit card debt statistic. These few things to consider will make a difference in your information as they relate to eToro Trading. They are by no means all there is to learn as you will quickly discover. We know they are terrific and will aid you in your quest for solutions. Getting a high altitude overview will be of immense benefit to you. But we have saved the best for last, and you will know what we mean as soon as you have read through.

A trading system with high probability of successful trades, does not guarantee profit if the system does not have a comprehensive approach to cutting losing trades or closing profitable trades, in the right places. If, for example, 4 out of 5 trades sees a profit of 10 dollars, it will take only one losing trade of 50 dollars to lose money. The inverse is also true, if 1 out of 5 trades is profitable at 50 dollars, you can still consider this system successful, if your 4 losing trades are only 10 dollars each.

Check your credit report regularly without paying for it. By law you can request a free credit report once a year. Make sure your report includes information from all the three major reporting agencies. Review them to ensure all the information is correct and challenge any inaccurate information you find.

If you are considering getting any type of credit card, make sure that you consider a rewards card. Since we?re talking about your personal finances here, there might as well be something in it for you personally since you?re going to go the credit route. Rewards can include airline miles, cash back, or other rewards.

Pay yourself first. When you get your paycheck, set aside a certain amount for your savings account first. Don?t pay bills, don?t buy anything, just take some money and put it aside for a rainy day. This will ensure that when a rainy day does come along, you already have a little help.

One of the tips that you can follow when you go to the store is to shop with a friend. Have them set a time limit as to how long you are going to stay in the store, which will reduce the chance of you spending money on items that you do not need.

Car maintenance is essential in keeping your costs low during the year. Make sure that you keep your tires inflated at all times to maintain the proper control. Running a car on flat tires can increase your chance for an accident, putting you at high risk for losing a lot of money.

Often when people try to save money, their approach is to try to spend less so they have more leftover to save later. If you are serious about improving your personal finance, you should do the reverse. When you receive your paycheck, set aside money that you want to save first, and then use the remainder for spending. By immediately restricting your budget, you will save more effectively.

To really be in control of your personal finances, you must know what your daily and monthly expenses are. Write down a list of all of your bills, including any car payments, rent or mortgage, and even your projected grocery budget. This will tell you how much money you have to spend every month, and give you a good place to start when making a household budget.

(AP) ? President Hugo Chavez bid an emotional farewell laced with references to Jesus Christ and independence hero Simon Bolivar as he departed Venezuela on Friday for Cuba for urgent surgery to remove a tumor he says is probably malignant.

Clasping the hand of his youngest daughter, Chavez addressed allies of his socialist political movement and troops standing at attention at the Miraflores presidential palace.

"I say this from my gut: With cancer or without cancer ... come rain, thunder or lightning ... nobody can avoid a great patriotic victory Oct. 7," the president said, referring to the date of Venezuela's presidential election. "Long live Chavez!"

The socialist president, who is seeking a fourth term, referenced Bolivar and Christ's burdens to describe his battle with cancer.

"Our (founding) father Simon Bolivar once said, 'I am a man of troubles.' I say as a son of Bolivar, I too am a man of troubles. We are a people of troubles," Chavez said. "Let the troubles come and add like the cross of Christ to the definitive liberation of the country. With the cross of Christ, one must sometimes bear pain as a spur to love. It is fuel for love."

Chavez's black SUV left the palace and rolled slowly through the capital, with red-shirted bodyguards clinging to the running boards. His head and shoulders sticking out of the sunroof, the firebrand president waved to onlookers lining the avenues and people flying Venezuelan flags from rooftops.

A motorcade of white vans and police vehicles with flashing lights followed Chavez to the airport, where he shook hands with officials and spoke briefly before taking off for Cuba in the presidential plane.

Several hours later, Chavez contacted Venezuelan state television by telephone, saying he had arrived in Cuba and had been greeted by Raul Castro at the airport.

"I have faith that everything will go well," Chavez said.

The president said he planned to meet with doctors on Saturday, and undergo a series of medical tests.

Chavez, 57, is turning to the same Cuban doctors who extracted a baseball-size cancerous tumor from his pelvic region last summer. This time, the growth is smaller, about an inch (two centimeters) in diameter.

Cuba and Venezuela are staunch allies, and Chavez enjoys a warm relationship with former leader Fidel Castro and his brother, President Raul Castro.

The Venezuelan president has not disclosed the precise location of either tumor, nor said what kind of cancer he had, but described next week's surgery as urgent.

Cuban health care is generally considered good, but oncology experts not involved with Chavez's care say he could be taking a risk by skipping more respected facilities in the United States, Europe or Brazil ? which has Latin America's most advanced cancer centers with specialized radiation equipment.

"If you have a 'common' cancer, that of the breast, colon or lung ... then it's going to be easy to find standards of care that are the same in the U.S., Brazil or Cuba," said Dr. Julian Molina, an oncologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. "The problem comes when you have a tumor that's not one of the common ones, and that's what most of us suspect Chavez has."

Latin America's top cancer doctor, Paulo Hoff, who heads the cancer center at Sao Paulo's Sirio-Libanes hospital, considered the region's best, would not talk specifically about Chavez's case. But he did say that a cancerous tumor in the pelvic region would be mainly limited to four types: prostate, rectal, bladder and sarcoma, the latter being a rare and deadly form of tumor.

National Assembly President Diosdado Cabello, a retired army lieutenant who accompanied Chavez in his failed 1992 coup, said Friday that the Venezuelan opposition should be the most worried about the president's survival.

"The people in the street will not retreat a single millimeter, not a single millimeter, from what has been accomplished in these 13 years" since Chavez took office, Cabello said.

Chavez allies have accused their political foes of hoping the president will die, opening a door for the opposition to win the Oct. 7 vote.

Rival candidate Henrique Capriles has rejected such allegations and said he wishes for a Chavez recovery so Capriles can triumph "fair and square."

Luis Vicente Leon, director of local polling firm Datanalisis, said Chavez's most important political concern is convincing people that he's healthy.

"It is a different scenario if in the mind of voters an idea remains that the president is ill, with his near future compromised," Leon said.

As Chavez's motorcade traveled through the streets, hundreds of supporters covered his SUV with flowers and even a portrait of Jesus that read: "I will heal you. Forward, commander!"

"This goodbye should encourage him. I hope he returns and knows we love him," said Lucia Cabeza, an unemployed 24-year-old.

For others, it was just the latest spectacle surrounding a man with a confirmed flair for the theatric. He was given a similar send-off last summer when he flew to Cuba for treatment.

"It was a terrible exaggeration. They took him here, they took him there," said Fatima Abreu, a 47-year food vendor. "It's not the first time he's leaving, nor the first time he's having surgery. Even for his own health, he should be taking it easy."

"Chavez has been doing this for 13 years," added Margarita de Rodriguez, a 55-year-old homemaker. "Recently they celebrated the 4th of February, the coup that failed, and now they're making a circus of his illness. They always do everything thinking about the elections."

Chavez plans to continue governing from Cuba instead of delegating authority temporarily to Vice President Elias Jaua. He has not said when he might return to Venezuela.

Acer's CloudMobile gets manhandled, sexy shell may hide Android secrets (video)

Acer CloudMobile
Acer's CloudMobile has already broken cover once. Now it's been manhandled in the flesh by members of the media. Sadly, we weren't on hand at Fashion Week in Milan to give it the once over ourselves (we'll have to wait for MWC for that), but the folks at Notebook Italia were. It looks like the 4.3-inch display is, in fact, of the 1280 x 720 variety, and the processor tasked with pushing all those pixels is a dual-core 1.5GHz part. Underneath that award-winning shell is also Dolby Mobile sound, NFC and Ice Cream Sandwich. Interestingly, reports are that the handset is running the unannounced Android 4.1, but we haven't been able to confirm that just yet. Also not quite ready for prime time? It's namesake AcerCloud platform, but the company still has a few more months to work that one out before the anticipated Q3 release. Check out the video after the break and hit up the source link for a few more photos.

Venture Capital Limited Partnership | StartupLoans.org

Venture capital limited partnership offers some advantages to investors in a sense that it limits the investors? liability. Each investor is only accountable for a particular amount, which is only up to the total of his investment. There is limited risk with regards to plunging into deep debt in case the business does not become profitable. In a venture capital limited partnership, the amount of the loss is no more that the invested amount, which can actually be used, if necessary, as a tax write-off.

Venture capital limited partnership, in a nutshell, is a type of partnership which has been created to provide the financial resources needed for the launching of a new business project. It is a limited partnership which aims to invest in small businesses that have high growth potential. This limited partnership includes two or more partners who typically make specific commitments to the business venture. Each investor, within the partnership?s terms, is only accountable for the amount of his investment in the new business project.

One of the most common approaches to financing new business startups is raising venture capital. Interested investor groups form the limited partnership with the objective of creating a bank of resources which will cover the costs associated with the launching of a new business endeavor, as well as to sustain its operations until the business will be able to turn a profit. The investors, as part of a venture capital limited partnership, typically do not expect to receive a return on their investment until after the business becomes profitable. At that point, the business can then begin to pay off the initial investment within the terms provided for in the partnership?s founding documents.

The precise makeup of a venture capital limited partnership includes all the basic elements which are required by law. However, beyond the requirements as stated by the law, the structure may also be configured based on the preferences of the investors. For instance, the investors can establish how much investment offers how much control in the business, as well as the number of votes that each investor will have.

What are the Benefits offered by a Venture Capital Limited Partnership?

A venture capital limited partnership offers a lot of benefits to investors. Some of these are:

  • It limits the investors? liability.
  • There are no worries about sinking into debt in case the business venture does not become profitable.
  • The amount of loss in a venture capital limited partnership cannot be more than the amount of the investment.
  • In case of a loss, it can be used as a tax write-off.

How to form Venture Capital Limited Partnership

Aside from the partnership agreement that limited partners must conform to and sign, those that wish to form a venture capital limited partnership are required to file partnership documents with the state registration office. Such documents must contain the name of the partnership, its physical address and the composition of the partnership. As provided for under the law, there is no requirement to provide the documents with details on the names of the limited partners or their contributions to the partnership.

In the same vein, the nature of its activities, as well as the purpose of the limited partnership need not be disclosed in the documents. There is also no requirement to submit copies of the partnership agreement. Investors in a venture capital limited partnership have limited liability. This means that their liability is confined on the debts that have been incurred by the company to the extent of their investment.

Things to Remember in a Venture Capital Limited Partnership

It is the obligation of limited partners in a venture capital limited partnership to disclose their status when dealing with other entities. This way, other business entities or parties will be better informed that the one dealing with them carries only limited liability.

A venture capital limited partnership typically become percentage owner of the company they are putting their money into. Sometimes, the money that have been entrusted to the venture capital limited partnership by a number of third party investors will be used to finance new business projects.

Rush Limbaugh on Santorum and Satan (Politico)

Rush Limbaugh said on his radio show Tuesday that Rick Santorum will have to explain his warning that ?Satan has his sights on the United States of America.?

?It?s part of the predictable attempt to impugn Santorum as an absolute religious nut and wacko,? Limbaugh said. ?But he did say these things, and he?ll have to have an answer for these things when queried.?

The speech Santorum made at Ave Maria University in 2008 saying that Satan has set his sights on the United States exploded across the web and headlined the Drudge Report on Tuesday.

?This is a spiritual war. And the Father of Lies has his sights on what you would think the Father of Lies would have his sights on: a good, decent, powerful, influential country - the United States of America. If you were Satan, who would you attack in this day and age?? the Republican presidential contender said in August 2008. ?He attacks all of us and he attacks all of our institutions.?

?Satan is attacking the great institutions of America, using those great vices of pride, vanity, and sensuality as the root to attack all of these strong plants that have so deeply rooted in the American tradition,? Santorum added.

Limbaugh, who said the focus on Santorum?s speech shows that a ?double standard does exist,? added that the former Pennsylvania senator?s comments are ?not the kind of stuff you hear a presidential candidate talk about.?

?That stuff is out there,? Limbaugh said, according to a transcript of the show. ?It?s headlined on Drudge and the Left has it, and Santorum will have to deal with it. He?ll have to answer it. I don?t know. It?s just not the kind of stuff you hear a presidential candidate talk about. It?s not ordinary in that sense.?

In the speech, Santorum also said Satan was ?the most and first successful? in conquering academia, which he said ?a long time ago fell.?

The next, Santorum said, ?was the church.?

?We look at the shape of mainline Protestantism in this country, and it is in shambles. It is gone from the world of Christianity as I see it,? Santorum said.

Irish mammals under serious threat from 'invasional meltdown'

ScienceDaily (Feb. 21, 2012) ? Some of Ireland's oldest inhabitants are facing serious threat and possible extinction because of foreign species, according to researchers at Queen's University.

The red squirrel, Irish hare and red deer are just some of Ireland's indigenous species which are under threat as a result of the introduction of foreign species. A new study which took place over the last two years looked at the impact of two introduced species -- the bank vole and greater white toothed shrew -- on two native small mammals, the wood mouse and the pygmy shrew. If the rate of invasion continues as at present throughout the island of Ireland, its native small mammals will die out in at least 80 per cent of their available habitat.

The study, published in the international journal Biological Invasions, found that in the recent past the pygmy shrew has completely vanished in parts of Ireland where both invasive small mammals are found. Wood mouse numbers have decreased by more than 50 per cent in areas where the bank vole is longest established.

Small mammals occupy central positions in food webs, so major changes in species composition which are already occurring, will have both top-down and bottom-up effects in the ecosystem affecting bird and mammal predators as well as the invertebrates, seeds and seedling that small rodents and insectivores feed on.

Professor Ian Montgomery, lead researcher from the School of Biological Sciences at Queen's University, said: "The introduction of alien mammals to Ireland over the last 100 years has had major detrimental effects, threatening our indigenous habitats and species. The American grey squirrel, for example, passes a deadly virus to native red squirrels, whilst European hares threaten the ecological and genetic integrity of the native Irish hare through competition and interbreeding.

"Governments, both north and south of the border, are urged to work together to address the overall problem of invasive mammals throughout Ireland, and ensure that we understand both the mechanisms of invasion and the impacts of these aliens. It is no longer tenable to treat each invasive species as an isolated case. We should establish a realistic plan identifying the mammal species that are key to maintaining our unique biodiversity and ecology and those that we should eliminate or control."

The new study is the first of its kind to systematically analyse the cumulative effects of invasive mammal species on indigenous species. Such a process is known as 'invasional meltdown'.

Studies linked to better understanding of cancer drugs

Johns Hopkins and National Taiwan University researchers have discovered more details about how an energy sensing "thermostat" protein determines whether cells will store or use their energy reserves.

In a report in the Feb. 9 edition of Nature, the researchers showed that a chemical modification on the thermostat protein changes how it's controlled. Without the modification, cells use stored energy, and with it, they default to stockpiling resources. When cells don't properly allocate their energy supply, they can die off or become cancerous. The Johns Hopkins team focused especially on enzymes that add or remove so-called acetyl groups from protein molecules.

"Understanding how cells are affected by adding acetyl groups to proteins, particularly those involved in energy use, is important because there is increasing use of drugs that block acetyl-removing enzymes for treatment of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases," says Jef Boeke, Ph.D., professor of molecular biology, genetics and oncology, and director of the High Throughput Biology Center at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. "Blocking acetyl-removing enzymes turns on anticancer genes that help fight cancer; however, it is not known what other genes and cellular processes may also be affected by these treatments."

To determine which enzymes remove acetyl chemical groups from which proteins, the researchers engineered human cells with reduced levels of each of 12 enzymes known to remove acetyl chemical groups. In each of these cell lines, they then turned down each of about 20,000 genes and used a DNA "chip" to identify which genes were affected by reduced levels of the acetyl-removing enzymes. The DNA chip highlighted a specific interaction between the thermostat protein, AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), and one of the acetyl-removing enzymes, HDAC1.

With less HDAC, AMPK was turned "off," presumably because it retains its acetyl group, the researchers concluded. AMPK acts like an energy thermostat because when energy levels are low in the cell, AMPK kick-starts processes that use the cell's energy reserves and cuts off reactions that store energy. On the other hand, when the cell has plenty of energy, AMPK turns off, causing energy in the form of sugar and fats being stored for later use.

Because the HDAC1 protein turned on AMPK, the researchers presumed there would be a corresponding acetyl-adding enzyme to specifically turn off AMPK. To find this enzyme, they extracted AMPK protein from eight different cell lines, each with reduced levels of a type of acetyl-adding enzyme. They found that AMPK in cells with reduced levels of this acetyl-adding enzyme, called p300, was less acetylated than in cells containing normal amounts of p300.

To confirm the idea that adding or removing acetyl groups directly affects how AMPK controls the way the cell uses energy, they measured the cell's energy stores with the help of a dye that accumulates in the fat globules of a cell. The dye let them estimate the size of fat globules that store energy. The cells unable to add acetyl to AMPK contained less of the dye and therefore smaller fat globules compared to normal human cells. Conversely, the cells unable to remove acetyl groups from AMPK contained more of the dye, indicating bigger fat globules. The research team concluded that when AMPK contains acetyl groups the cell uses less of its energy reserves than when AMPK does not contain acetyl groups.

Boeke says the work on human cells followed similar studies on yeast energy proteins done earlier in his laboratory.

The Key To Staying Married - Doing Life Together

?I like you and want to stay married.? Great. But that probably isn?t going to cut it unless the commitment is much deeper.

Think about it. Most people stay committed when the relationship goes well, but what about when stress mounts and pressure comes your way? Then what happens to commitment?

It?s when we experience the hard times that the level of commitment you have to the relationship really counts.

Commitment means staying in the game when it feels bad and isn?t exactly going your way. This is when the committed partner takes action and says, ?OK, let?s deal with the problems and work it out.?

And this is where sacrifice comes in?you may have to compromise or do things you aren?t thrilled about like helping clean bathrooms, take out the trash or watch a TV show your partner likes.? But this level of commitment?where sacrifice and compromise come in?helps couples go the distance.

A study of newlyweds in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology supports the role commitment plays. When couples take their vows and commit to the good and bad of relationships, they better mean it or the chances of breaking up increases. Of course, I am not talking about staying in an abusive relationship or one that puts you at risk physically.

When problems come, stay in the moment. Communicate, compromise and look at the big picture. It?s not about who wins, but all about how you work together to honor those vows.

?
