The Many Uses Of Gravel | Home Improvement Association

uses of gravel post by: Ammar K.

gravel new jerseyGravel?is composed of unconsolidated rock fragments that have a general?particle size?range and include size classes from granule- to?boulder-sized fragments. Gravel is sub-categorized by the?Udden-Wentworth scale?into?granular gravel?(>2 to 4 mm?or 0.079 to 0.16 in) and?pebble gravel?(>4 to 64 mm?or 0.2 to 2.5 in). One cubic yard of gravel typically weighs about 3000 pounds (or a cubic meter is about 1,800 kilograms).

The use of gravel in gardens has become very popular in recent years. This is largely down to a trend for low-maintenance gardens, either for buy-to-let properties or for busy homes where families want to relax in the garden rather than maintain it.

Using gravel to surround a planting scheme has a number of advantages.? First and foremost it is visually pleasing and can give a pleasant contrast to your colorful plantings. Due to most decorative gravel options having neutral colors, the vivid colors of flowers are enhanced and ?pop? far more than when simply surrounded by top soil.

In addition to its aesthetic properties, gravel has a couple of practical benefits that are perhaps the best reasons for purchase. Unlike top soil, gravel is able to both allow moisture through to a plant?s roots and also retain this moisture and suppress its evaporation, ultimately encouraging growth. It should be noted that while gravel can inhibit weeds, it cannot suppress their growth entirely and therefore should always be coupled with garden membrane.

There is a huge choice of gravel available, offering different shapes, sizes, grade and colors. For a garden, the right size is likely to be between 6 to 18mm, as anything larger is hard to walk over and anything smaller wouldn?t stay in place. It makes sense to get rounded gravel for a garden as some of the cheaper gravels used commercially in car parks and the like can be very sharp, particularly flint gravel.

The best solution is to get down to a builders? yard or garden center and make your choice. Or if a friend or neighbor has had some gravel laid down that you like, ask them what it was and where they got it from.

Using gravel in a garden is a bit like including filet mignon in a three course meal; it may have been done years and years, but it?s amazing taste has not been diminished in the slightest.
